NYPD Police talk down suicidal man from bridge

Lt. Jack Cambria of the NYPD’s Hostage Negotiation Team made a personal connection to the distraught man and convinced him to commit to 24 more hours. Todd Maisel/NY Daily News.
The NYPD Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) rescued a man threatening to jump from a bridge on Tuesday, September 24, 2013.

The HNT's Commanding Officer, Lt. Jack Cambria, is quoted in the article referring to how he engaged the person.  As you will see, it displays how effective some of the skills that are in much of literature and that it really does work when used by an expert.
“I just wanted to buy him 24 more hours,” said Cambria. “I told him that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. If he jumps, that’s it.”
They also talked about something they had in common.
“We’re both from Brooklyn so I bought some credibility with the guy,” said Cambria.
After an hour, the man agreed to surrender to authorities.
